Chapter 5
Janus is at once a humanlike and yet completely alien doorway entity: Janus looks like a man and in all ways looks normal except for one important way and this is that Janus has two faces. This represents his nature of knowing the future and the past and also having the ability to open doorways to other realms. Janus was first worshipped by the ancient Romans although we will be commanding Janus. But Janusâs power is all about doorways, gateways, transitions, starts and endings: also including the past and future: and so he is very good as an entity to be used to a open gateway so that other magical beings can be summoned. But the nature of Janus I feel is one of adaptability and there are not many places which Janus cannot be used to open a gateway to or summon. But of course he is a naturally good entity to summon any Roman deities or magical entities: even entities which got any type of mention in Roman literature or myth. It is easy to overlook Janus however because although the magick at the time which was used with Janus is not presently the most popular many in places, and in fact he has not that used and yet he has a lot of power. In fact many of these ancient gods are the most powerful and even those which are used less than many others have sometimes more power than many others and are usually more likely to present themselves when called. It is not that they do not work magick: Janus is great for magick: it is rather that many occultists of all types have decided to compartmentalise their work and so to not allow the use of certain types of magick or certain beings. But if there is one thing I have learnt and this is that it is better in the occult to not build walls at all, because the walls you think are the walls of your castle become the walls of your limitations and they restrict you more than anything else because it is very difficult to get out of a restraint which has been made by you and specifically made to work against your weaknesses: obviously if you made it badly then it would be easy.
But also Janus is an entity which although having two faces always seems to be quite unified. But this should not be too much of a shock because these entities are such that how they look is not necessarily any reflection on what is within and by this I mean that Janus does not need a heart or lungs or many other things which us humans and many other animals find necessary and not just useful. But making a list of entities which are the most suitable for Janus to summon is actually quite straightforward because we need only to look at those Roman deities: although we would be using them as magical servants. But
